2008 KMEA Conference

Our students participate in all grade level bands including Symphonic Band, Concert Band I, Concert Band II, 6th Grade Beginning Red Band, 6th Grade Beginning Black Band, and have opportunities to perform in Advanced Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band II, Percussion Ensemble, and other small instrumental groups throughout the year. The bands have received consistent distinguished ratings at the Kentucky Music Educators Concert Band Festivals throughout the past 40 years.

Symphonic Band
Our most advanced group at CMS, the Symphonic Band, consists of 65 of our finest wind and percussion students. This year long course introduces “comprehensive musicianship” through music performance of
challenging and varied literature.  Skills and concepts from the previous year are developed and expanded upon.  In addition to continued refinement of individual performance skills, greater emphasis is placed on ensemble performance skills.  Students will continue to develop their knowledge of music theory, begin to analyze and evaluate music, and use critical thinking skills to make refinements in their performance.  Individual and ensemble performance skills will be expanded through musical expression and technical accuracy.

Concert Band I
This group consists of students with at least one year of playing experience.  An audition is required and is capped at 60 students. Individual performance skills continue to be developed as well as fundamentals of ensemble playing.

Concert Band II
Concert Band II is for students with at least one year of playing experience.  There is an extensive review of the first year as well as a continue of individual playing technique.

6th Grade Beginning Band
All 6th graders begin in the group and is for students with no experience on a musical instrument.  Students learn the fundamentals of playing, practicing, and basic ensemble technique.
